Main Category: Nutrition / DietArticle Date: 06 Oct 2008 - 1:00 PDT
Burger King Corp. (NYSE:BKC) announced that all BURGER KING® restaurants nationwide are now cooking with trans fat free cooking oils. Furthermore, by Nov. 1, 2008, all BURGER KING® menu ingredients will contain zero grams artificial trans fat, including ingredients used in baked goods, par-fried and pre-portioned menu items.
The BURGER KING® system will be transitioning to two proprietary blends of three oils.
"Removing artificial trans fats from our cooking oils and ingredients is another example of our BK Positive StepsSM nutrition program," said Burger King Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John W. Chidsey. "Many BURGER KING® restaurants have been using trans fat free cooking oils for several months, and our customers tell us that their favorite menu items taste the same, or even better. This is a result of our rigorous operational standards, supply requirements, and extensive consumer taste tests."
As part of the BK Positive StepsSM nutrition program, Burger King Corp. has executed a number of initiatives including: a pledge under the Council for Better Business Bureaus' (CBBB) Children's Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative to limit advertising to children under 12 years old to meals that meet Burger King Corp.'s strict nutrition guidelines; introduction of fresh fruit with BK™ Fresh Apple Fries; enhanced availability of nutrition information; and the use of 100% recyclable Kids Meal bags, among other initiatives.

Not So Fast! There's Probably Still Some In There!
posted by Rob H. on 6 Oct 2008 at 11:14 pmTrans Fat "Free" means up to one-half gram is allowed per serving.
People tend to eat more than one serving of most things and this will build up over the days and weeks.
Artificial Trans fats are really the only fat that significantly (and dangerously) lowers the "good" cholesterol and raises the "bad".
The list of diseases and disorders keeps growing with infertility gaining more attention of late.
Understanding cell membranes and how these fats interfere with their functions should put everyone off eating any of these fats. They will be totally banned eventually.
I was right about these fats in 1972 and will probably be right about them in the future.
Sadly, they probably contribute to brain disorders as well. The suffering they caused could have been avoided but it was all about shelf life and easy fixes. Too bad they've caused such suffering and misery.
