The University of Toronto's International Medical Graduate (IMG) review lectures, slated to start Sept. 13, offer a boost to foreign physicians seeking to qualify to practise in Canada.

The 100-hour lecture series offers a review of 23 key medical topics, such as cardiology, medical ethics, infectious disease and obstetrics. The sessions, identical to those taught to fourth-year undergraduate medical students, assist foreign medical graduates in preparing for the Medical Council of Canada qualifying exam.

"It was my main refresher for the exam," says Iranian-born Dr. Mogjan Taremi, currently a second-year resident in radiation oncology at Queen's University. "It gave me hints on how to prepare. You also meet people who are going through the same thing and can share ideas on how to prepare for the test."

Nigerian-born Dr. Enitan Sogbesan, educated in England, says the lectures also helped him become acculturated to medical practice in Canada.

"I took the qualifying exam before the lectures but the lectures provided much more insight into practising medicine in Canada," says Sogbesan, who is currently doing his clerkship. "It was also a review of material for me. I hadn't done anything but ophthalmology for 10 years, so the information I had learned was dated."

The IMG review lectures are run by U of T's Continuing Medical Education program and are open to all foreign medical graduates. The course director is Dr. Naznin Lalani, a U of T professor and an IMG herself. Visit the website at www.cme.utoronto.ca for more information on costs and registration.
