Proactive media activity by the 2008 British Pharmaceutical Conference (BPC) press office team paid dividends as pharmacy practice research into prescribing in nursing homes hit the front pages of The Daily Telegraph. The broadsheet triumph topped a successful week that saw BPC practice research and science research reported in a wide range of newspapers including The Independent on Sunday, The Sunday Telegraph, The Times, The Guardian and Daily Mail. New pharmacy research launched at the conference was also reported on some 30 regional radio news programmes, on regional television and numerous online media sites.

A collection of 17 health and science stories demonstrated pharmacists as the experts in medicines and vital contributors to quality, cost-effective prescribing and community health services. In addition, pharmacists were profiled as leading practice and science health researchers. BPC Chairman, John Gentle, says that BPC offers a unique opportunity to publicise pharmacy skills and expertise to a wide audience. 'Each year BPC publicity gets the message out there to the general public, patient groups and other health professionals that pharmacists are at the very core of leading health and science research.

'BPC news helps to explode any public notion that a pharmacist's role is limited to dispensing. It is a great chance to build on the Society's regular media health campaigns and tell people about the wide range of work being done by pharmacists every day.'
