The NPA, PSNC and CCA have issued a joint submission to the Health IT Policy Review commissioned by the Conservative Party.
The submission explains that pharmacists' access to care records will be an important factor in the profession's ability to provide new and extended services to patients. It sets out the reasons why pharmacists need appropriate read-and-write access to care records, and highlights some of the processes that are in place to protect the security of patient information.
Providing community pharmacists with appropriate role-based read-and-write access to both detailed and summary care records has the potential to greatly improve patient safety, support the development of new services for patients, improve interdisciplinary working and increase the quality and continuity of care provided to patients.
The review is being led by Dr Glyn Hayes, President, BCS Primary Health Care Specialist Group, and was commissioned by Stephen O'Brien MP, the Conservative Shadow Health Minister. Its role is to inform future Conservative policy for the use of Information Technology in the NHS, health and social care in England.
