The National Pharmacy Association and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain jointly organised a session at this year's NHS Alliance conference in Bournemouth.
Presentations were given on the Pharmacy White Paper and the Minor Ailments Service to link to this year's conference focus of how and why primary care is making a difference to health, health services and health professionals.
Jonathan Mason, currently Head of Prescribing and Pharmacy, City and Hackney Teaching PCT and National Clinical Director-designate gave a presentation entitled "Use Pharmacy First": which focused on the Minor Ailments Service operating in his PCT area. He explained how the service works in practice, how it and other pharmacy services integrate with other parts of the NHS and how it brings benefits to pharmacists, GPs, PCTs and, above all, patients.
Mike Holden, Chief Officer of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Local Pharmaceutical Committee spoke about the difference that could be brought about from the recent White Paper, illustrating how it could work for patients, pharmacy and general practice.
Gareth Jones, (NHS Liaison Manger, NPA) said: "Attended by representatives from General Practice and PCTs, this conference provides a valuable opportunity for generating fuller comprehension of the extent of services that can be offered from community pharmacy."
Sadia Khan (Lead Pharmacist for Self-care, RPSGB) said: "The session stimulated a lot of lively debate and interest in the expanding range of services available via the community pharmacy setting."
