Yesterday voters determined who would be the United States' 44th President and the members of the 111th U.S. Congress when they take office in January 2009. In response, the following statement was issued by Holly Henry, RPh, National Community Pharmacists Association's (NCPA) president and owner of Rxtra Care, Inc., in Seattle and Bruce T. Roberts, RPh, NCPA executive vice president and CEO:

"Today is an exciting day for pharmacy practitioners. The past two years have been a whirlwind of election activity that has resulted in the vast majority of candidates endorsed by NCPA for their support of community pharmacy issues being voted into office. We look forward to working with the next Congress to ensure a fair, competitive landscape for small business owners and patient access to medications and their community pharmacist - especially in rural and underserved areas. "

"The election also produced a strong candidate for health care reform in President-elect Barack Obama. In his letter to our association back on October 11th, Obama said, 'Pharmacists have always been on the cutting edge of quality improvement, from early adoption of health IT to initiatives to reduce adverse drug events, to medication therapy management (MTM).' We look forward to working with the President-elect on these issues and others that utilize pharmacists to improve the quality of health care for Americans. NCPA is especially excited to participate in the health care reform debate that will play out in the days and months ahead."

"We also commend Sen. John McCain for his efforts in the hard fought campaign and look forward to continuing to work with him in the Senate on issues of importance to community pharmacists and their patients."

The National Community Pharmacists Association, founded in 1898, represents the nation's community pharmacists, including the owners of more than 23,000 pharmacies. The nation's independent pharmacies, independent pharmacy franchises, and independent chains dispense nearly half of the nation's retail prescription medicines.
