CIGNA Corporation, one of the nation's leading health service companies, congratulates President-elect Barack Obama and the Vice President-elect Joe Biden, along with other newly -elected and reelected national and state officials.

"President-elect Obama made reforming our health care system an integral part of his campaign platform. He proposed expanding the availability of health care to those who are without insurance while also lowering the escalating costs of care, which are objectives CIGNA has consistently supported," said CIGNA Chairman and CEO H. Edward Hanway. "However, neither the private sector nor government can do it all alone. A public and private partnership of health care stakeholders-private health plans, federal and state governments, employers, providers and individuals-is critical to expanding access, providing choice and controlling costs."

"We look forward to working with all stakeholders on a plan that preserves individual choice and responsibility; reorients payments and incentives to reward quality outcomes; and expands employers' flexibility in meeting the needs of their workers. The ideal plan is one that is best able to offer affordable, quality health care for all-universal coverage-while preserving the individual's right of choice along the way so that the individual can be free to obtain coverage that best meets his or her needs," stated Hanway.
