Family Planning Association Responds To New NATSAL Research On Sexual Behavior, UK

Responding to research published in the International Journal of Epidemiology on the high proportion of people not using condoms when they have sex with a new partner, Julie Bentley, Chief Executive, fpa said:

"This research shows that no matter what age you are, or what type of relationship you are in, sexual health messages still apply.

"The truth is, most campaigns on safer sex and condom use are aimed at young people. However, people in their 30s, 40s and over are starting new sexual relationships. But embarrassment and not knowing how to negotiate condom use get in the way of practicing safer sex. 'Thirtysomethings' may see sexual health as a young person's concern and so do not always think about using condoms.

"Looking after our sexual health is important throughout all our lives. By giving people of all ages more confidence in talking about these issues and accessing sexual health services, the prevalence of condom use will rise, and rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancy will go down."

Commenting on the rates of condom use in younger people, Julie said:

"It is very encouraging to see that over two thirds of young people aged 16-19 are using condoms when they have sex with a new partner. This shows that through a combination of targeted campaigns and sex and relationships education it is possible to make a positive difference to the sexual behaviour of young people."
