AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., issued the following statement today thanking Senate Democratic leaders for including $1 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the economic stimulus bill currently under consideration by Congress:
"The AAMC wants to sincerely thank the leadership of the Senate, particularly Senators Reid and Byrd, for providing additional federal support for the NIH in their stimulus legislation.
This increased NIH funding is not only an investment in our economy, it will support groundbreaking research that will improve the lives of all Americans through new medical advances. These research breakthroughs contribute to the financial strength of our nation by creating skilled jobs, new products, and better technologies.
We strongly urge Congress to support this stimulus bill because investing in the NIH will benefit our nation's economy and the health of all our citizens."
