The RESILIENT TRIAL is a landmark prospective randomized trial comparing two strategies of revascularization for superficial femoral artery stenosis and occlusions.
The trial compared percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) versus angioplasty and stenting from both an acute and 12 month outcome point of view. In the initial evaluation, there was a statistically significant benefit for use of the self-expanding nitinol LifeStent compared to angioplasty alone, and this benefit seemed to continue through to the one year time period.
Dr. Barry Katzen, Professor of Radiology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine and Founder and Medical Director of the Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute in Miami, Florida, presented additional data at the 24-month point.
With all patients (data still being collected from some sites) having reached their 24- month follow-up and with freedom from target lesion revascularization maintained in the test group, the data continues to support the use of stenting in most superficial femoral artery lesions, while angioplasty may be effective in certain other lesions, particularly in those that are shorter in length and less complex.
