Optimum Medical Therapy Can Positively Influence Long-Term Survival After EVAR

While most operators focus on anatomic and device related issues that may affect initial and long-term outcome, as in many types of vascular disease, other factors may be of equal importance in long-term survival of patients with aneurysms.

Barry T. Katzen, M.D. Professor of Radiology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine and Founder and Medical Director of the Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute in Miami, Florida, detailed analysis of over 10 years data performed at Institute has shown several negative predictors for long-term survival that are unrelated to the aneurysm itself.

This includes the effect of hemoglobin, as well as the effect on renal function on long-term survival. Interestingly, the presence of statin therapy seems to have improved long-term survival.

Dr. Katzen stated that in vascular therapy, one should not forget the importance of optimum medical therapy to improve overall outcome.
