"As we begin work to overhaul a broken health care system during a time of economic distress, value-based purchasing is an idea whose time has come.
"AARP commends Senators Baucus and Grassley for acting on their long-held commitment to refocus our health care system on results (how we get and stay healthy) and not mechanics (which doctors we can see for what treatments at a cost of how much). Their plan to establish value-based purchasing for hospital care in Medicare is a critical first step to fixing a fundamental flaw endemic to our entire health care system.
"We share the strong desire of Senators Baucus and Grassley to pay for quality - not quantity - of care. It's just common sense, and we look forward to working with them to make sure this is part of any reform to Medicare or the broader health care system."
