Marathon Oil Corporation announced it will donate $1.5 million for the Hurricanes of 2008, with $500,000 designated for Hurricane Gustav and $1 million for Hurricane Ike.

"We are grateful to Marathon for helping the Red Cross shelter, feed and care for the people affected by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike," said American Red Cross President and CEO Gail McGovern. "Their generous financial support ensures help is available to those whose homes and lives have been devastated. The American Red Cross could not perform its lifesaving mission without a proven partner like Marathon."

Red Cross disaster workers from every state helped people affected by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. In Texas, more than 8,000 Red Cross disaster workers provided over 240,000 overnight stays for people seeking refuge in 397 shelters, and served more than 8 million meals and snacks to people displaced by the storm. In Louisiana, the Red Cross provided more than 87,000 overnight stays to people in 111 shelters. Around 4,700 Red Cross disaster workers served more than 3 million meals and snacks to those feeling the effects of not only Hurricane Ike, but also those still trying to recover from Hurricane Gustav.

The Red Cross relies on the continued contributions of companies like Marathon. In addition to Marathon's $1.5 million donation, it also contributed $250,000 in November 2008 to Red Cross disaster relief efforts for the Northwest Central Ohio Floods.

"We have witnessed first-hand the positive impact this incredible organization and dedicated volunteers have on people who find themselves in need due to disasters beyond their control."
