Employee Assistance Programmes (independent and confidential counselling and information services) provide access to counselling for people who may not normally consider it and also help to reduce the stigma surrounding mental ill-health.

These and other benefits will be discussed in a keynote address by Eric Marshall, Finance Director and Chairman of EAPA, at the 2008 conference of the Association for Independent Practitioners (AIP). The conference entitled "Professionalism & supervision: preparing for the future" is being held on Friday 28 November at Woburn House, Tavistock Square, London.

As the statutory regulation of the counselling and psychotherapy profession draws nearer, the aim of the conference is to inform delegates about imminent developments within the field of psychological therapy and how these may impact on independent practitioners.

Identifying some of the risks faced by counsellors and psychotherapists will be the focus of a session by Steve Johnson and Philippa Weitz. Their workshop "Risk Management - avoiding the pitfalls" will explore in detail some examples of what can happen when things go wrong, including a look at the legal and ethical implications of some commonly made mistakes. A workshop by Kathy Raffles will look at finding the right supervisor and developing a balanced and professional relationship in order to safeguard clients, develop ethical understanding, and practise and support wellbeing. The supervision relationship will also be the subject of the opening keynote by psychotherapist Heather Fowlie.

Further workshops will be held on the following topics

- Regulation and Supervision - Christina Docchar, Project Manager for Supervision and CPD at BACP.

- Fit for purpose: competencies in counselling supervision - Elspeth Schwenk, BACP Accredited independent practitioner.
