Doctors' leaders today (Tuesday 9 December) were very pleased that the Government is planning to ban the display of cigarettes at point of sale in England and Wales. The BMA's Head of Science and Ethics, Dr Vivienne Nathanson, said:

"This is very good news and will help prevent children from starting to smoke. Children who smoke face years of tobacco addiction that can lead to life-threatening diseases and premature death.

"However, the BMA is disappointed that the Government is not planning to ban cigarette vending machines. We hope the proposals to make vending machines 'child-proof' will be rigidly enforced and that if they do not work then this issue will be revisited by ministers."
