Sunil Chutto, Modern Matron at Newham Centre for Mental Health run by East London NHS Foundation Trust, won a prestigious NHS Champions Award. The Awards 2008 are run by the King's Fund in association with Evening Standard and NHS London. The awards are a celebration of the contribution made by individual NHS staff who have provided exceptional care and gone the extra mile for their patients.
Sunil has made an enormous contribution to creating excellent multi-disciplinary working for the benefit of the patients. He has facilitated a Well Being Group, a weekly meeting of all staff and patients on the ward to create a sense of a therapeutic community and has set up a protected therapeutic hour after lunch, when all nursing staff dedicate time for patients, for example, through playing board games or group discussions.
Sunil has made big improvements to the ward, introducing film sessions and buying a popcorn machine so patients get the full 'movie experience'. He has creating a family room on his wards, a dedicated space for patients and their visitors and children.
Sunil says: "It is a great honour to receive this award, and my thanks goes to Mathis Erdmann for nominating me, and also to Carrie Battersby, Borough Director and Barbara Rice, Borough Lead Nurse who have always supported and encouraged my ideas and innovation. I am proud to work in the Newham locality and also within the wider Trust".
Dr Robert Dolan, Chief Executive of East London NHS Foundation Trust said: "Sunil is a remarkable person who has transformed the lives of people with severe mental health problems. I am very proud to have Sunil contributing to the work of the Trust".
