Incontinence And Pelvic Floor Disorders Focus Of Society Of Urologic Nurses And Associates Annual Symposium

Urologic nurses and health care professionals will explore basic and advanced practice at the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA) Annual Symposium: Incontinence and Pelvic Floor Disorders, March 11-14, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency, San Francisco, CA. The symposium will highlight the most current advances and treatments for incontinence and pelvic floor disorders as well as urodynamics.

Attendees will hear from a dynamic faculty of nurse practitioners, physicians and physical therapists in preconference workshops and education sessions on such topics as incontinence, pelvic pain, pharmacology for pelvic disorders, and advanced practice clinical issues in men and women, young and old. Participants will also have the opportunity to earn continuing nursing education (CNE) credits, attend research luncheons, network with colleagues and explore the exhibit hall to learn about technologies and products. Urodynamics Course

SUNA has designed a comprehensive 18-hour Urodynamics Course which meets the training recommendations set forth by the International Continence Society (ICS). The course will begin on Wednesday, March 11, and Thursday, March 12, with the two-day Basic Urodynamics preconference workshop. The course continues on Friday with a full slate of urodynamics sessions throughout the symposium, including a live video testing portion. Participants who attend the full preconference workshop and all urodynamics concurrent sessions throughout the symposium will earn a SUNA certificate of recognition for urodynamics that meets the ICS recommendation for Basic Urodynamic Training.

Program

On Thursday, March 12, three other preconference workshops will be offered. "Pelvic Pain Multidisciplinary Treatment Approach for the Patient with Pelvic Pain of Musculoskeletal Origin" will present tools for using a multidisciplinary treatment approach for the patient with pelvic pain. "The Basics of Urinary Incontinence" will discuss the different types of incontinence, patient evaluation and tools and treatment options. In "Marketing a Continence Program," attendees will learn how to start and maintain a continence program.

On Friday, March 13, Tamara Dickinson, RN, CURN, CCCN, BCIA-PMDB, and Nancy J. Norton, BS, will present the opening general session, "Continence Promotion: State of the Science? Where Are We Now?" Dickinson and Norton will provide an update on continence promotion and public awareness of urinary and fecal incontinence.

Concurrent sessions will run Friday, March 13, and Saturday, March 14, and are organized into specialty tracks: advanced practice, general urology, geriatrics, incontinence, pediatrics, pelvic pain and urodynamics. Topics include:

The impact of pharmacologic agents on sexual dysfunction and possible alternative medications
Individualized treatment plans for patients with dementia and incontinence
Use of artificial sphincters and slings to control male urinary incontinence following prostate surgery
Pediatric day and night wetting - managing age-related issues and treatment options
The role of physical therapy in the treatment of painful bladder syndrome and interstitial cystitis
Biofeedback and age-related treatment outcomes

Craig Comiter, MD, and Charles Nager, MD, will present the general session, "The UDS Debate" on Saturday, March 14. Comiter and Nager will provide a point-counterpoint discussion of the necessity and reliability of urodynamic testing.

Continuing Education

The SUNA Annual Symposium will offer a total of 12.25 contact hours of continuing education in nursing. Additional contact hours will be given for preconference workshops and sponsored symposia.

SUNA is an approved provider of continuing nursing education (CNE) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation (ANCC-COA).

SUNA accreditation is reciprocal in the states and specialty organizations that recognize the ANCC-COA accreditation process.

SUNA is an approved provider of continuing education in nursing in California, CEP 5556.
