National Pharmacy Association (NPA) Chief Executive, John Turk has highlighted that the local pharmacy is the best place to seek out advice on colds and flu.

John Turk, NPA Chief Executive said: "In recent weeks, alerts have been issued by various healthcare organisations highlighting the increased demand for GP appointments as well as attendances at A&E departments and out-of-hours services. Much of this has been caused by a big increase in the number of people suffering from colds or flu. Colds don't require antibiotic treatment and pharmacists can advise on the best way to relieve symptoms. 57 million GP consultations per year are estimated to involve minor ailments, such as colds and flu, and take up to the equivalent of one hour a day of a GP's time."

John Turk continued: "Pharmacists undergo 5 years of studying and training before qualification - they are the experts in medicines. You don't need to arrange an appointment, and most people are within walking distance of their local pharmacy."

The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) was established in 1921 as the trade association of community pharmacy owners. Its core purpose is to represent, support and protect the interests of all community pharmacy across the UK to ensure its members prosper commercially and professionally.
