Endoscopic Insertion Of Cystostomy Button For Bladder Drainage In Children

UroToday.com - In this article, Drs. Haider and Subramaniam described a safe and simple minimally invasive technique for insertion of cystostomy buttons for bladder drainage and cycling in children.

This is a prospective study looking at their experience with the insertion of cystostomy buttons in children since 2002.

In all, 12 children (4 girls, 8 boys) with a mean age of 7.1 years underwent endoscopic insertion of a cystostomy button. Mean follow-up was 11 months (3-24 months). There were no complications such as leakage in the endoscopically inserted buttons.

They concluded that button cystostomy is a safe and effective form of bladder drainage and gives children a less restricted quality of life. There was an excellent fit and no leakage.

We typically like to use Dewan catheters for suprapubic drainage and cycling. The reason we use this urodynamic catheter is it allows us to perform urodynamic studies if necessary, especially in patients with complex urologic history or surgical intervention. The only drawback of the Dewan catheter is that it cannot be left in for an extremely long period of time. We typically will perform a urodynamic study within 2 weeks of suprapubic catheter insertion.
