The West Virginia Medicaid Fund Advisory Council last week unanimously approved a plan to ask CMS for permission to raise Medicaid reimbursement rates for dentists for the first time in eight years, the Charleston Gazette reports.
According to the Gazette, the amount of the increases and which services will be covered is still being negotiated. West Virginia's Medicaid program covers some dental care for children younger than age 19 and emergency tooth extractions for adults ages 19 and older. The West Virginia Dental Association has suggested that dentists be reimbursed for additional services provided to infants and toddlers to encourage early dental health. Association executive director Richard Stevens said, "Not all fees are going to be increased," adding, "Our suggestion is to increase the fees where the need is the greatest. I consider our recommendations to be financially responsible."
According to the Gazette, the move is "expected to increase the number of low-income West Virginians who receive dental treatment" because the rate increase likely will result in more dentists accepting additional Medicaid beneficiaries as patients. In addition, the rate increases likely will reduce state expenditures in the long term because fewer beneficiaries who have delayed dental care will seek treatment in emergency departments, according to dentists and state Medicaid officials. Stevens said, "There will be improved access for patients," adding, "A person can have a dangerous abscess, and they can go to the emergency room, but all they're going to get is a prescription for an antibiotic and pain medication."
State Medicaid officials expect CMS to approve the request within the next two months. Shannon Landrum, a state Medicaid spokesperson, said, "This will allow us to modify our state Medicaid plan," adding, "We don't want our dentists losing money when they treat Medicaid patients" (Eyre, Charleston Gazette, 1/11).

I just don't understand
posted by Crystal on 1 Jun 2011 at 11:47 pmI'm so confused and very upset with the whole wv medicaid system right. I just don't understand how it is that wv medicaid will pay for all these pain doctor visits and pain pill medications for 75% of west virginia citizens and 50% of them only go for the pill's to get high on or sell to make a quick buck, but when it comes to a surgery that could very well save the life of my mother the decline to pay.
I know of 100's of women who have had a complete hysterectomy or tumor's removed that were thought to be cancer and their medical card paid for everything so why would they not pay for my mother's??? She has went to several doctor's here in Mingo county over the years and been given pain pill's by almost everyone and there was never a problem there with payment. Now she has finally got her life together and actually went to a real doctor instead of a pill mill they have found a mass on her kidney and several tumor's on her ovary that needs removed so they can tell 100% if its cancer.
She was set to have her surgery on june 7th and everything seemed to be on track. The nurse from Cabell Huntington called today to inform her that her surgery would take place tomorrow instead which would be june 2nd. Not even 2 hours later she gets the call that her medicaid card decline to pay but they would keep trying to get it approved over the next couple weeks. I just don't get it??? Why will they pay for all these doctor visits and all the pill's that are kill everyone around us but will not pay for the treatments to save our loved one's???It's not fair!!!!!
