To coincide with the peak 'back to school' asthma period, the National Asthma Council Australia will host a special Rural Health Education Foundation satellite broadcast program on January 27, 2009, funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.
Asthma in children differs from asthma in adults in clinically important aspects and the program: A is for Asthma: Managing asthma in primary school kids, will feature a panel of experts who will explore key issues including the pattern of symptoms, anatomical factors and recommended treatments.
Panel experts will comprise a paediatric respiratory physician, general practitioner, community pharmacist, paediatric asthma educator and an Asthma Friendly Schools representative and it will be chaired by ABC Radio National's Dr Norman Swan.
After viewing the 60 minute program, participants will be able to improve their ability to assess and diagnose school aged children with asthma; understand the indications and treatment regimens of current paediatric asthma medications; indentify appropriate review periods and medication adjustment for optimum control; and, update their knowledge of recommended self-management strategies for children with asthma and their carers.
This program is accredited or endorsed for CPD/CPE by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine, the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, the Royal College of Nursing Australia and the Australian Physiotherapy Association.
