2009 Career Development Recipient Announced By National Lung Cancer Partnership

The National Lung Cancer Partnership is pleased to announce I-Ching Wang, Ph.D. of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is the recipient of the 2009 Career Development Award.

The $80,000 grant provides two years of protected time for new investigators to develop their careers in lung cancer research.

The award will support Dr. Wang's research with FoxM1, a protein that binds to specific parts of DNA and plays a role in supporting aggressive growth of lung cancer tumors.

"Understanding how FoxM1 contributes to lung cancer could lead to protein-directed therapies and the eventual elimination or control of the number one cancer killer in the U.S.," said Dr. Joan Schiller, president of the National Lung Cancer Partnership and chief of hematology/oncology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

More people die of lung cancer than from colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Research into this deadly disease continues to be severely under-funded at the federal level in proportion to the death toll from the disease. To combat this trend, the National Lung Cancer Partnership grants support scientists who choose to pursue lung cancer research.

National Lung Cancer Partnership is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to decreasing deaths due to lung cancer, and helping patients live longer and better, through research, awareness and advocacy.
