France is the latest European country to have created an independent Order for nursing.

The Conseil National de l'Ordre des infirmiers was created in November 2008 and its members have formally elected their first President on Wednesday 14 January.

The new President, Dominique Le Boeuf, graduated in 1982 and has practised as an intensive care nurse for many years before taking on management positions.

During the last three years she has worked on the creation of evaluation systems for the competences of healthcare professionals.

NMC Chair Tony Hazell wrote a letter of congratulations to Dominique Le Boeuf, explaining that the NMC looks forward to cooperating closely with the new French Order.

The NMC Chair stressed that European regulators need to work hand in hand to protect public safety and to promote high levels of professional competences.
