Commenting on new figures released today by the ONS on the prevalence of smoking in the UK, Professor John Britton, Chair of the Tobacco Advisory Group said:

"It is encouraging to see an overall fall in the prevalence of smoking, especially the 4% reduction among the 'routine and manual' households. The figures show that the smoking ban is having the expected effect, removing the possibility of smoking in the work place and encouraging people to give up. The problem remains in preventing people from taking up the habit in the first place, seen by the rise in the number of men aged 16 to 19 smoking."
