Responding to today's publication of ONS figures indicating a small rise in the numbers of people drinking above the daily recommended limits, Professor Ian Gilmore, President of the Royal College of Physicians said:
"On the basis of these figures it appears unlikely that we will stem the rising tide of alcohol-related health harms in the near future. While people's awareness of the health risks associated with drinking above the recommended limits is surprisingly good, knowledge of those limits is still poor, despite ten years of concerted work to raise awareness levels. Consequently, it is vital that the government take the next step of introducing mandatory labelling on drinks so that people are in a better position to keep track of their own consumption levels, especially now, as more people socialise at home, rather than in pubs and bars in order to take advantage of the cheap deals offered in the large supermarkets."

Resignation Is Not The Answer
posted by Hermann T. Meyer on 26 Jan 2009 at 1:56 amThis is a statement of resignation. He seems to have lost his confidence in the governments ability to succeed against the alcohol industries influence. Perhaps he should try to get help by global networking. The medical society could be a strong power. Or why not go on strike?
Acknowledging The Facts.
posted by Peter O'Loughlin on 26 Jan 2009 at 5:20 amGiven the cozy, longstanding relationship the UK Government has with the alcohol drinks industry as witnessed by their considerable input into the Government's so called alcohol strategy 'Safe Sensible and Sociable' which appeared to be promoting more use of alcohol, with oxymoron phrases such as 'more needs to be done to promote sensible drinking' appearing on almost on every page, Prof Gilmore is taking a realistic view of what needs to be done.
Given the total harms caused by alcohol, it should be seen for what it is, a highly addictive toxic substance which has the potential to attack every organ in the body starting with the brain. That we allow such a drug to be advertised as being desirable and glamorous, and promoted via soap operas as being essential to each and every occasion of sorrow, or joy is unacceptable.
