Last month saw the meeting of one of Europe's premier respiratory drug delivery conferences, DDL19. Held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, DDL19 brought together over 420 of the world's leading authorities in the field; the highest number of attendees in the conference's nineteen year history; to meet, present and discuss the latest advances in pulmonary drug delivery.

In its new look format the conference spanned three days, with 29 speakers from a diverse range of backgrounds providing themed lecture sessions on:

- Novel therapies, formulations and animal models for respiratory disease
- The evolution of the interface between universities and industry: How academia contributes to the development of inhaled products
- Materials Science and Nanotechnology: Why polymer and particle properties matter so much
- Quality by Design: Broadening the application and sharing the learnings

Presentations were made by leading pharmaceutical companies and from a variety of UK, European and International Universities.

This year also saw the highest number of exhibitors at the event, with the exhibition area being extended to cover two floors and showcasing offerings from premier sponsors including Pfizer, Novartis, 3M Drug Delivery Systems, Catalent Pharma Solutions and Bespak. Over 60 Technology poster presentations were on display with the top industry and top academic posters receiving awards.

As well as providing numerous networking opportunities, this year's conference also benefitted from a recruitment board for those presenters, sponsors and exhibitors looking for new talent. The conference also opened its doors for the first time to pupils from Edinburgh's Trinity Academy, giving a number of high school students an opportunity to witness, at first hand, the workings of a leading international scientific conference.

Commenting, Dr. Sandy Munro, Chairman of the DDL Committee said: "We are absolutely delighted to confirm that this year's DDL has been another great success. Achieving record attendee, exhibitor, and poster presentation contributions reaffirms DDL's position as one of Europe's' leading conferences. With our twentieth anniversary fast approaching, DDL20 is set to be bigger and better than ever before, but as ever, we vow to maintain the excellent quality and value that has long been associated with our conference."

DDL20 will this year run from the 9th to 11th December 2009 at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. For exhibition, sponsorship, speaker and attendance opportunities contact Sheila Coates on 01275 849019, email admin@aerosol-soc.org.uk or visit www.ddl-conference.org.uk

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the conference the DDL organisers will also be holding a Gala Dinner on Thursday 10th December within the opulent surroundings of Prestonfield Hotel, Edinburgh.
