A growing number of parents are adding pediatric chiropractic care as an integrative component of their children's health care regimen.
Survey data indicates that the percentage of chiropractic patients under 17 years of age has increased at least 8.5 percent since 1991, says the American Chiropractic Association. Further, a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study indicated that nearly 3 percent of children in the United States were treated with chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation in 2007, making it the most common form of doctor-directed complementary or alternative medicine used by children.
According to Elise Hewitt, DC, a Portland-area doctor of chiropractic and president of the American Chiropractic Association's Pediatrics Council, chiropractic care isn't just for adults. Infants and children can benefit from spinal manipulation and other forms of chiropractic care just as much as their parents and grandparents.
"It's very important that a child have both a pediatrician and a pediatric chiropractor. A pediatric chiropractor is not there to replace the role of the pediatrician," says Dr. Hewitt. "The pediatrician provides medications when necessary and delivers care in times of serious illness and injury. A pediatric chiropractor is there for preventative wellness care and maintenance of the child's structure. The two are very complementary."
Studies are beginning to show that chiropractic can help children not only with typical back and neck pain complaints, but also with issues as varied as asthma, chronic ear infections, nursing difficulties, colic and bedwetting.
Chiropractic spinal manipulation is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle. Doctors of chiropractic -- commonly referred to as chiropractors -- practice a hands-on, drug-free approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Following their undergraduate education, doctors of chiropractic obtain a four-year degree consisting of more than 4,500 hours of study and clinical experience. Pediatric specialists receive additional post-doctorate training.
"The vast majority of parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care," Dr. Hewitt notes.
The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) is the nation's leading chiropractic organization representing more than 15,000 doctors of chiropractic and their patients. To find a chiropractor near you, visit the ACA's searchable member database at http://www.acatoday.org/DocSearch.

Children Do Not Need Chiropractic
posted by Anon on 31 Jan 2009 at 5:03 amThere is no scientific evidence that chiropractic care benefits children, and there are studies refuting the claims made in this article. If you wish to research this yourself, you can go to PubMed on the internet, a service of the National Library of Medicine, part of the National Institute of Health, and search for articles. You will see for yourself that these claims are unfounded. It is interesting that the Australian Chiropractic authority recently issued proposed rules preventing these sorts of treatments of children by chiropractors. It is shameful that state law allows chiropractors to make these claims. In addition, chiropractic manipulation of the cervical spine (neck) carries the risk of vetebral artery dissection and stroke.
Chiropractic is beneficial for ANY AGE
posted by Amanda on 3 Aug 2010 at 9:41 amAs working as a Chiropractic Assistant I can assure you that chiropractic care is in NO WAY harmful to children! If it were really harmful to children do you really think so many parents and a continuing number would bring there children in as early as newborn? It helps relieve pressure off the nervous system and helps healthy structural growth, immune system function, and whole body. Chiropractic adjustments are very gentle and will not harm your child! There is nothing but beneficial results in pediatric chiropractic care. And if you want to go off "scientific evidence" there is none supporting it has caused stroke. If it were as dangerous as you say it is, it would not be around! Chiropractors have as many years of schooling as M.D.'s.
Health Plan Advocate
posted by Chrystal on 17 Feb 2011 at 11:10 amChiropractic care can have benefits but I do not see why a parent would subject a child to something that is not needed. I have seen families of 6 all going to the chiropractor together. Now come on, really? Is this a family event? This is a gross abuse of a service that could be of benefit in the future. Health plans pay tons of money for this care which, in this case and many others, is grossly abused!!!
Strongly believe in chiropractic care for children
posted by Rebecca on 14 Sep 2011 at 11:05 amMy daughter has been treated since she was 3 weeks old. I was terrified at first but tried it as a last resort to halp the never ending colic. Her pediatrician had me try everything he could think of and nothing helped her. After 5 minutes at the chiropractor she was feeling better. It was very gentle. She only used her little finger to adjust her.
She is still going weekly now, at 9 months, for her asthma. After being on a daily breathing treatment for months that costs the insurance company tons of money, I have been able to take her off that treatment all together and she is just adjusted once a week. It takes 3 minutes and we are medication free.
I believe in the long run this is a cost savings for the insurance and it has been a life saver for us. It has helped restore sanity to our home and I have a much healthier, happier baby.
P.S. I always attempted the medical treatment that her pediatrician offered before chiropractic treatment. The chiropractor has had better results almost every time.
