The paper reports the cost implications of providing specific psychological and pharmacological interventions for young people at 'ultra' high risk (UHR) of developing a psychotic disorder, versus minimal treatment.
The two treatments, Specific Preventive Intervention (SPI) and Needs Based Intervention (NBI), were compared at three time points: treatment phase, short-term follow-up and medium term follow-up.
Although the SPI group initially incurred significantly higher costs than the NBI group, they required less outpatient treatment and therefore was more cost effective in the long-term. Researchers found that specific interventions designed to treat UHR young people are more cost effective than standard interventions.
The study provides valuable insights into the potential cost-effectiveness of early intervention for UHR individuals.
