The study describes the clinical characteristics, methods and activities of early intervention services in Japan.
Psychiatric services in Japan remain predominately hospital-based, involving huge numbers of psychiatric beds and long-term stays. The total number of inpatient beds in Japan is high at 2.9 per 1000 people, compared to 0.9 in the United Kingdom and 0.5 in the United States.
Despite difficult circumstances, the authors indicate how Japanese psychiatry services are continuing a transition from hospital-based to community-based psychiatry and highlight successful attempts at promoting early psychiatric intervention.
