Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is an important cause of morbidity and mortality and is the most common viral opportunistic infection in recipients of solid organ transplant (SOT). Currently, no consensus exists regarding the most appropriate method for preventing CMV, and toxicities and threat of drug resistance occasionally limit the utility of existing antiviral agents. Alternative agents are being investigated, but more research is needed before these are approved for use in SOT recipients. It is important for healthcare professionals to be aware of the current and emerging treatment and prevention strategies for CMV disease in SOT recipients.
To address the need for current education on CMV, Robert Michael Educational Institute LLC (RMEI) and Postgraduate Institute for Medicine (PIM) are jointly sponsoring a complimentary CME newsletter entitled CMV Infection in Solid Organ Transplantation: Clinical Clues and Prevention Strategies. This activity is supported by an educational grant from ViroPharma Incorporated.
The expert faculty for this CME newsletter includes Atul Humar, MD, MSc, FRCPC, Director of Transplant Infectious Diseases and Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Sunwen Chou, MD, Professor of Medicine at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon.
"Robert Michael Educational Institute LLC recognizes that continuing medical education plays a crucial role in the provision of quality health care and is dedicated to offering professionals meaningful opportunities for lifelong learning," says President and CEO, Robert M. Colleluori.
