A new report from InMedica predicts that wireless technology will help drive double-digit growth for the global sports performance monitors market. With recent technological developments, sports-performance monitors are becoming increasingly sophisticated. A number of manufacturers are beginning to incorporate a catalogue of features in addition to their standard technology, enabling the consumer to perform detailed and thorough post-performance analysis. These value-added features will ensure that the global sports performance monitors market will continue to grow strongly over the next five years, at a forecast CAGR of 10.1%.

Kelly Barritt, Market Analyst at InMedica states, "As the market for sports-performance monitors matures, manufacturers will need to maintain demand by offering additional functionality. With a growing number of 'fitness phones' and MP3 players incorporating sports-performance monitoring features, the traditional monitors will have to evolve to ensure they maintain their share of the market. A number of websites have now been established that offer data tracking and advanced analysis, enabling users to create personalised training plans, track their performance and share their achievements with others."

Data upload is also likely to advance as wireless technology is incorporated into monitors, enabling the user to upload data quickly and conveniently without the requirement of a USB cable. There is still great debate over the wireless technology that will be incorporated into sports-performance monitors. However, it is agreed that a technology that is low cost and can be powered by a single-cell battery is crucial. The two front runners are currently ANT and Bluetooth Low Energy.
