There are at least 100,000 sufferers of Lymphoedema in the UK and Ireland. Provision for treatment varies greatly from region to region and often Lymphoedema is poorly diagnosed. Some sufferers are told that nothing can be done to help and many doctors are sceptical about treatment for Lymphoedema as well as confusing the condition with obesity or simple skin infections.

Lymphoedema can often be uncomfortable and although it cannot be cured the major symptoms (swelling and the risk of infection) can be improved and controlled with appropriate treatment. If left untreated the condition will get worse. To help raise awareness, provide clarity and understanding about the condition amongst both patients and doctors The British Lymphology Society is set to hold its first Awareness Week in April 2009.

The campaign will run from the 20 April until the 26th and will include the launch of the Society's first two "5 Guides" that have been drawn up in consultation with the Lymphoedema Support Network which represents patients and the Macmillan Cancer Support organisation. The two Guides will flag up 5 key things that GPs and patients need to know about Lymphoedema.

The "5 Guides" will be launched at the International Lymphoedema Conference hosted by WoundsUK at Ascot Racecourse from the 21 April 2009.
