UK - The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) is staging a workshop today (29 September) on the sexual health crisis affecting young people.

Getting it right for teenagers - adolescents and sex is being held at the Royal Society of Medicine and co-hosted by the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH).

The event will focus on models of care for young people aged from 13 to 24, dealing particularly with issues of child protection and consent. The workshop will also give advice on the new Sexual Offences Act (2004), young men's sexual health needs and sexual health screening.

Richard Burack, RCGP Adolescent Taskforce spokesperson, said: "The sexual health of young people in this country is of real concern to GPs. Transmission rates of sexually transmitted diseases have risen rapidly in young people aged 13 to 24. We are seeing more and more cases of Chlamydia in particular, with the biggest rise in the 16 to 24 year-old age group. GPs are on the front-line of an epidemic - today's workshop will try and look for solutions."

The Office for National Statistics is due to publish UK sexual health statistics for 2003 later today.
