The Royal College of GPs (RCGP) has accused the Government of dragging its heels on national Chlamydia screening.

Speaking at an RCGP and British Association of Sexual Health and HIV conference in London yesterday (29 September), Dr William Ford-Young, RCGP spokesperson on sexual health, said:

"The Government has known about this problem for a long time now but has been dragging its heels when it comes to funding. The 'national' Chlamydia screening programme still only covers 30% of the UK and modern, non-intrusive Chlamydia testing kits are still not widely available.

"More needs to be done and quickly. GPs are ready to help in the fight against the spread of sexually transmitted infections among teenagers and young adults but we need the resources to do the job. And if we don't deal with this problem we face the prospect of more and women becoming infertile in later life - something none of us want to see."
