Dr. Jane Weintraub, University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), USA, has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the International Association for Dental Research's H. Trendley Dean Memorial Award for meritorious contributions to epidemiology and public health. The award will be presented to her at the 87th General Session & Exhibition in Miami, Florida, USA, on April 1, 2009.
Dr. Weintraub holds the Lee Hysan Chair in Oral Epidemiology and Dental Public Health at the University of California at San Francisco School of Dentistry. After receiving her bachelor's degree from the University of Rochester, Dr. Weintraub began her research career as a dental student at the State University of New York-Stony Brook, and received her M.P.H. and D.P.H. residency training at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. She taught at Harvard University, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before moving to UCSF in 2000.
Currently, she is principal investigator and director of the National Institutes of Health-funded Center to Address Disparities in Children's Oral Health, which was recently renewed for $17 million. She previously conducted a major randomized clinical trial of fluoride varnish; important research concerning efficiency, costs and effectiveness of sealants among high-caries-risk populations; a large-scale epidemiologic intergenerational study of periodontal disease; and several important policy initiatives at the national level in the USA.
Dr. Weintraub has published widely in leading dental and non-dental journals, authoring nearly 100 articles, chapters, and a textbook. She presents regularly at the IADR General Sessions. This award, one of the 16 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, is supported by the Colgate-Palmolive Company in memory of H. Trendley Dean, the 21st President of the IADR and first dental officer of the National Institutes of Health. The award consists of a monetary prize and plaque and is given for distinguished accomplishments in research and development in the fields of behavioral science, epidemiology, and public health. It is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR.
