University Of Florida Professor Receives IADR Research In Dental Caries Award

Dr. Robert Burne, University of Florida, Gainesville, USA, is the 2009 recipient of the Research in Dental Caries Award, to be presented by the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) at its 87th General Session & Exhibition in Miami, Florida, USA, on April 1, 2009. Dr. Burne is head of the Department of Oral Biology at the University of Florida, College of Dentistry and was previously assistant professor in the Department of Dental Research at the University of Rochester, N.Y., USA.

Dr. Burne was among the early pioneers of oral microbiology, applying molecular biology and molecular genetic techniques to the study of oral pathogens and, in particular, to the physiology and pathogenesis of Streptococcus mutans. His extensive and thoughtful studies have had a great impact on our understanding of the formation of the oral biofilm and its pathological role in the caries process.

Dr. Burne is the recipient of several National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIH/NIDCR) R01 awards and has authored more than 60 published papers. In addition to his many honors, Dr. Burne has distinguished himself through service as president of the Microbiology and Immunology Section of the International Association for Dental Research, as a member of the NIDCR Caries Technical Advisory Panel, and as a member of the editorial board for the journal Infection and Immunity.

Generously supported by Johnson & Johnson Oral Health Products, the Research in Dental Caries Award is one of the 16 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The award, consisting of a monetary prize and a plaque, is designed to stimulate and recognize outstanding and innovative achievements that have contributed to the basic understanding of caries etiology and/or to the prevention of dental caries.
