Registered Dietitians at Dairy Farmers of Canada and The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Québec, in collaboration with Dietitians of Canada and the Fédération québécoise du sport étudiant, have granted Coeur et berlingot Awards to twelve schools across Quebec. Worth $200 each and awarded as part of Nutrition Month, these grants aim to help schools carry out a project that will encourage young people to eat healthfully and stay active.

Each project was selected based on how it emphasized the pleasure of moving and eating vegetables, fruit and milk products. The recipients of the Coeur et berlingot Awards are:

"The entire community must take action to help kids develop a healthy lifestyle," said Julie Paquette, Assistant Director - Nutrition for the Dairy Farmers of Canada. "As an environment where kids learn to make choices, schools can make a significant contribution to young people's health. We received more than a hundred submissions from schools with motivating and stimulating projects that encourage students to stay active and eat healthfully. It is important that we encourage their initiatives."

Recent statistics show that young people's nutrition and activity levels need to be improved (report from the Institut de la statistique du Québec, L'alimentation des jeunes québécois : un premier tour de table). Indeed, more than one quarter of children do not move enough, and they do not consume enough vegetables, fruit or milk products to meet their nutritional needs.

This is the third edition of the Coeur et berlingot Awards, which is an initiative of Registered Dietitians at Dairy Farmers of Canada and The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Québec, in collaboration with Dietitians of Canada and the Fédération québécoise du sport étudiant.
