The British Lung Foundation has produced leaflets in six different languages, which will help to support the World TB Day campaign which takes place on Tuesday 24th of March 2009. The leaflets are available in Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi, Turkish and Urdu, and it is hoped that they will continue to have a significant impact on the scale of impact of information on TB, which affects a reported 8,497 people in the UK.
TB is problematic because it can cause no immediate illness and can remain dormant for many years before the symptoms (bad cough, bloodstained sputum (phlegm) and chest pain) become prevalent. Appetite loss and fever are also common symptoms, as well as weight loss. Sometimes TB can quite easily be treated after diagnosis, however it can be fatal if it is not treated and such treatment can sometimes be difficult. Those suffering can have a strain which is resistant to any of a variety of drugs.
Dame Helena Shovelton, chief executive of the British Lung Foundation commented, 'the BLF is very proud to have produced leaflets which can contribute to reducing the impact of a disease such as TB in this way'. She added, 'TB affects more people in the UK than the majority of nations in Western Europe and we believe that it requires more attention nationally. Allowing people to more access to material that is legible to them is certainly good way to draw such attention'.
The British Lung Foundation TB multilingual leaflets can be ordered free of charge by contacting the BLF and can be accessed and downloaded free from the BLF website at: http://www.lunguk.org/OneStopCMS/Core/SearchResults.aspx
