Did you know that periodontal disease could be a risk factor for HIV? …that children of parents with high stress levels have more tooth decay? …that there's an association between obesity and periodontal disease?

These are but a few of the thousands of pieces of information which will be presented when the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) holds its 87th General Session & Exhibition, April 1-4, 2009, at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami, Florida, USA. It will also be the 38th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 33rd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR).

This year, over 3,500 scientific presentations will be made, divided among plenary/oral/poster sessions and symposia/workshops. Estimates are that more than 5,000 dental scientists, educators, students, and practicing dentists from around the world will convene, representing the latest thinking in dental research.

In addition to the individual presentations, there will be Distinguished Speaker lectures, symposia, and workshops during the four-day meeting, dealing with special-interest symposium topics ranging from optical diagnostics in the oral cavity, to salivary gland regeneration, to oral sensory function in aging.

Featured during Meeting Week will be the IADR/Unilever Hatton Awards Competition (42 competitors from 19 Divisions and one non-Divisional Section) for student investigators. The presentations, in poster format, will be judged by top-level scientists. Winners will receive cash prizes and plaques.

The Opening Ceremonies and Welcome Reception, from 4:15 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, April 1, will provide an exciting kick-off for the week's activities. Many awards and fellowships, including the 2009 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, will be presented. The Distinguished Lecture Series will feature presentations by three prominent individuals:

"Telomeres and Telomerase in Human Health and Disease", Elizabeth Blackburn (University of California, San Francisco, USA), Thursday, April 2. (All three lectures will occur at 9:45 a.m. in Room C125-126 of the Miami Beach Convention Center.) [NB: This is the W.J. Gies Distinguished Speaker Lecture.]

  • "Stem Cells in Squamous Cell Carcinomas", Fiona Watt (Cambridge Research Institute, UK), Friday, April 3. (This event is generously sponsored by Quintessence Publishing.)

  • "Science and Social Benefit: the Special Case of the Academic Health Sciences", W.R. Hume (United Arab Emirates University, Al Ain, United Arab Emirates), Saturday, April 4.
  • One of the unique opportunities offered to students is Lunch & Learning, where students may sign up to discuss, over an informal luncheon, topics of interest with senior researchers. This year, Lunch & Learning will be held on one day only - Thursday, April 2. Twenty-two senior scientists from a wide variety of dental disciplines are volunteering their services for this event.

Returning for the seventh consecutive year are Keynote Speakers, who will be presenting "state-of-the-science" addresses in all of the Scientific Groups.

Returning to the IADR meeting is a Job Opportunity Bulletin Service (JOBS), available to all registrants, located in the IADR Registration Area. Bulletin boards will be available to job recruiters to post job vacancies. There will also be a New Member Orientation Reception (Wednesday, April 1, 1:45-2:30 p.m.), where new members can find out about becoming more involved in the IADR and its specialty Groups and Committees. This reception is generously supported by the Colgate-Palmolive Co.

For the 29th consecutive year, commercial exhibits will be featured at the Meeting. Meeting participants are encouraged to visit the booths of the following:
