Diabetes UK Scotland's new office in Glasgow was officially opened today by Scotland's Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, Nicola Sturgeon MSP.

The opening also marks Diabetes UK's 75th anniversary.

Careline Scotland

As part of the opening, Nicola Sturgeon will spend time with the Diabetes UK Careline Scotland telephone counselling service, which handles calls from people with or worried about diabetes from around Scotland.

Education and support

She will also have an opportunity to see examples of diabetes education and support materials.

"An outstanding job"

"Diabetes UK Scotland does an outstanding job supporting people with diabetes and their families and carers," said Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon.

"It also works closely with the Scottish Government in forming policy, supporting the Cross Party Group on Diabetes, the Scottish Diabetes Group and the vital Diabetes Care Focus Group.

"Moving to larger offices in their 75th anniversary year is a sign not only of their success, but the growing public health challenge posed by diabetes. The Scottish Government is committed to tackling that challenge, by getting people to eat a healthier diet and to be more active. We also want to make sure we do all we can to minimise the complications associated with diabetes, and provide people with services of the highest quality.

"I wish Diabetes UK Scotland every success in their new home."

Others in attendance

The opening event will be attended by members of the Scottish Advisory Council of Diabetes UK, and representatives of the International Diabetes Federation together with other health charities including the British Heart Foundation, Epilepsy Scotland and the Stroke Association.
