The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) is pleased to announce JoLaine Reierson Draugalis, PhD as the recipient of the APhA Research Achievement Award in the Pharmaceutical Sciences. Draugalis will receive the award at the APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in San Antonio, Texas, April 3-6, 2009. APhA's Awards and Honors Program is American Pharmacist's most comprehensive recognition program.

The award, administered by the APhA Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science (APhA-APRS), encourages and recognizes outstanding meritorious achievement in any of the pharmaceutical sciences. The award rotates every year among the APhA-APRS sections that includes Basic Sciences, Clinical Sciences and the Economic, Social and Administrative Sciences. Contributions recognized are those which develop knowledge and integrate the process of science into the profession of pharmacy.

Draugalis was selected in recognition of her significant research contributions in the economic, social, and administrative sciences. Draugalis' research has influenced several areas of pharmaceutical education including curriculum development and assessment, academic and leadership career planning, economic implications of experiential education in pharmacy, and instruction in pharmacoeconomics and research methods. She has authored nearly 100 peer-reviewed, high-quality publications.

A colleague of Draugalis noted, "In addition to her contributions to pharmaceutical science research, she has crafted a distinctive career by staying abreast of cutting-edge knowledge in higher education and applying her expertise at her college of pharmacy, university, and nationally."

Draugalis is dean and Edith Kinney Gaylord Presidential Professor of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from Ferris State University and MEd and PhD degrees from the University of Arizona. She served on the faculty at the University of Arizona from 1987 to 2007, where she was named Basic Science Educator of the Year six times. In 1990, she received the Lyman Award for the outstanding article published in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, and she continues to be a frequent contributor to the journal, currently serving on the editorial board.

She is a past recipient of the APhA Gloria Niemeyer Francke Leadership Mentor Award, the AACP Robert K. Chalmers Distinguished Pharmacy Educator Award, and the KE/Merck Vanguard Leadership Award. She is a Carnegie Foundation Pew Scholar and a Fellow of APhA and ASHP. She served a three-year term on the AACP board of directors and was President in 2004 to 2005. She has served on numerous APhA committees and in the APhA House of Delegates.
