CBS' "Evening News" on Thursday reported on efforts to raise colon cancer awareness in the black community. According to CBS, black men are 44% more likely to die from colon cancer than white men, and black women are 46% more likely to die from the disease than white women.

In Boston, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute organizes community events to encourage residents of the black community to be screened. Half of all colon cancer deaths could be prevented with early detection, according to CBS.

Actor Terrance Howard, who recently took part in a Boston event, has partnered with the Entertainment Industry Foundation for a nationwide campaign to encourage people to get screened. Howard's mother last year died of colon cancer at age 56. "The only way I can find any peace of mind is trying to stop what killed my mother," Howard said (Miller, "Evening News," CBS, 3/26).
