Seven doctors who work at the Stapleford Centre, a drug addiction clinic, are facing The General Medical Council on charges of serious professional misconduct. They are accused of prescribing drugs inappropriately - they all deny acting improperly. The hearing is due to begin today. The Stapleford Clinic (private) has clinics in London and Essex. The problem started when one of their patients died. The patient had been sent home with a 'Do it Yourself Detox' kit. He choked in his own vomit during his sleep. This happened after taking diazepam, rohypnol, temazepam and other stuff in the 'kit'. He died in September 2001. Charging 7 doctors in one go is unheard of in the UK. Dr. Colin Brewer, founder of the clinic, faces charges related to treatment given to 13 of the 16 patients being looked at in this hearing. The hearing has been delayed, it should have started in February this year. However, Dr. Brewer became seriously ill and could not attend. Dr Brewer is charged alongside six others: Anthony Haines, Hugh Kindness, Nicolette Mervitz, Martin O'Rawe, Ronald Tovey and Timothy Willocks. The NHS has a policy of weaning addicts off drugs. The Stapleford Centre had a policy of maintenance prescriptions.

Extremely Grateful Patient.

I do not wish to go into the judgment made upon the Stapleford clinic, but would like to let anyone reading this that I too did the "home detox". At the time you were given the medication you signed form to say that you knew the combination of tablets was a lot, but also that you would have a carer 24 HOURS A DAY. I took my medication as necessary and within 10 days for the first time in a 10 year heroin addiction was clean. I also was able to contact a Specialist Detox nurse during this period. I know that I had a carer and there is no-way I would have choked, nor taking what was precribed did not hurt me. It enabled me to be clean where many NHS services had not.

I did relapse and luckily this wonderful clinic is still open and providing, understanding, bespoke care to each patient. Everyone is different. Addiction may not be a very popular subject, but if you have the disease I could not get such a wonderful service anywhere. This is a huge subject and therefore I have no room to go on. All I can say is, you put your life in their hands and they will allow you to live close to normal. With medication that each individual NEEDS. No having to stand in your local pharmacy swallowing methadone under supervision.

I am a 43 year old grandmother and would DESPERATELY love to do that detox again, it was affordable, effective. Unfortunately I am now left with a totally incompetent NHS service. I cannot comment on the patient that chocked, but it was one in god knows how many and I GUESS he wasn't supervised 24 hours, or in regular contact with his nurse, because the person would have known (if an addict) when you have taken more than your body can. If only I was able to do this detox I would be free again within 10 days.

NHS wont even look at detoxing me, let alone getting a prescription, e.g. 3 week wait from start to getting a prescription that is would be inadequate and they treat all with the same method. The patient doesn't matter. At the STAPLEFORD CLINIC it is the patients needs, privacy and allowing you to be normal to go back to work. I cannot work at present as my hours do not fit in with going to a pharmacy each day. The Stapleford take all this into consideration.

I cannot recommend the aforementioned clinic highly enough, and how angry putting them through the litigation that lasted over 2 years to put together was a total waste of time and the worry those doctors must have had at the thought of loosing their jobs when they were providing a marvellous service. At one time even advising the government on treatment of addiction etc.. WONDERFUL PLACE, EXTREMELY UNDERSTANDING KINDLY STAFF. If you have a problem do not think twice about getting an appointment with them. The help is marvellous. A Grateful Patient.
