Yesterday, NSW Health and IMET held the 'NSW Future Medical Training and Workforce Forum' in Sydney. Over one hundred representatives from bodies involved in the education and training of junior doctors united to discuss the problem of increasing medical graduates entering the health workforce.

The forum was designed to present new innovations and measures that could be implemented to ensure quality training places for doctors entering the system. Professionals presented ideas such as simulation and e-learning, the expansion of training sites and terms and altered hours and structures of rosters and rotations.

Workshop sessions were held in which the issues could be discussed in more depth. The issues of most concern were the need for increased clinical trainers and supervisors, the need for quality clinical places and the requirement for expansion of clinical sites to private hospitals and community health centers.

AMSA President Tiffany Fulde said, " Forums are wonderful as they allow people with a great deal of experience and knowledge to come together and discuss solutions. Now we need these solutions to be put into action with the help of solid plans and adequate funding."

The NSW government has committed to ensuring domestic graduates internship places until 2012. It is still yet to decide upon how this will be made possible. IMET present the ideas and initiatives discussed yesterday in the form of a recommendation, which will be presented to the state government.

Tiffany said, "We recognized this problem some time ago, it is wonderful to see this issue being addressed by so many people in the education and training field."
