Responding to news that the latest 'anti-obesity wonder drug' Alli is due to go on sale over the counter tomorrow, Slimming World Managing Director Caryl Richards says: "Doling out pills for weight loss is not a solution to obesity.
"Selling these pills over the counter takes no account of an overweight person's state of mind, their motivation, their self-esteem or their confidence to make changes - changes that could save their life and protect them for life.
"At Slimming World, with 40 years experience of working with overweight and obese people, we have learnt that the key to long-term weight management is a healthy, generous and realistic eating plan combined with real and effective support. It's well known that anyone taking weight loss pills still needs to follow a low fat diet and is encouraged to become more active. Members who follow and stick to Slimming World's eating plan are more successful over six months, losing an average of 21 lbs (10kg), double the average 10lbs weight loss offered by makers of Alli in the same period.
"There is no magic pill. The key to successful and long-term weight loss and maintenance is to make healthy habits a part of your everyday lifestyle. Research has also shown that the support that people receive at a Slimming World group plays a key role in boosting self-esteem and confidence to make the changes and keep weight off in the long term. It empowers people by putting them in charge of their own health. Plus Slimming World offers a more cost-effective solution at just £4.50 per week without any unpleasant side-effects."

Notes
- Slimming World, the UK's leading weight loss organisation, supports 300,000 to lose weight through adopting a healthy lifestyle each week.
- Slimming World's research shows that people following the programme make important changes to the way they shop, cook, eat and exercise. What's more, three quarters of them are positively influencing family members to eat more healthily and to exercise more regularly. They buy more fresh fruit and vegetables, they eat less sugary and fatty foods, they buy less ready-made meals and they make more time to cook for the family using basic, nutritious ingredients. In this way we influence over 3 million people each year.
- Slimming World is already working with the NHS in the battle against obesity through the Slimming World on Referral scheme which it pioneered and which now operates across 45 Health Trusts. Patients who are referred to Slimming World by their GP attend a 12-week course.

The Other Side Of The Coin
posted by Anon on 22 Apr 2009 at 7:29 amWell as a user of Alli i disagree with what has been said. This is not being sold as a wonder pill - it is NOT a magic bullet and just like slimming world (which coincidentally did not work for me) it takes commitment. I have been on Alli for under 2 months and have lost over a stone (14lbs) already so am unsure as to where the 10lbs in 6 months comes from.... As for side effects, i haven't suffered any, I was warned of the potential for them and therefore made the conscious decision to ensure i did not eat more than my allotted 15g of fat per meal - it's not rocket science!
When Alli is supplied it is made clear that a low fat, reduced calorie diet is recommended as is an increase in exercise so it is easy to continue in the future once the tablet course has been completed. Surely a healthier lifestyle is what the upshot of this is, as well as the subsequent weight loss.
I just wish the full story was being put across rather than people having hissy fits over assumptions or incorrect information. Word of advice, before making comments i find it is sensible to ensure you understand the subject matter.
Don't Con Yourself
posted by Alan on 27 Apr 2009 at 1:58 amAnon says they have lost loads of weight with no side effects and but have changed their eating habits to suit the pill's recommendation. No wonder they have lost so much weight - and could have done all that without the pill! Also it's a pity they couldn't have done that when on the Slimming World plan and been successful for LIFE.
What happens when you stop taking Alli? Do you also stop the low fat diet, if so what your doing is a waste of time and money and worst of all may reinforce the belief that you are a failure. The whole weight issue is so emotive as the Anon's "hissy fit" comment indicates (What hissy fit? !! Seems like a a considered response to me) and yes, we all want a magic pill to fix things but.... there really isn't one don't con yourself.
Agree With Alan
posted by Paul on 8 May 2009 at 1:02 pmAs someone who has lost nearly 2 stone with Slimming World, I agree with Alan. There is no magic pill, and slimming world has changed my eating habits for life without having to continue paying £7 a week for the rest of my life.
And as for the hissy fit that anon mentioned, i think that the Managing Director of Slimming World would understand her subject matter!
Perhaps anon didn't have the commitment for Slimming World or was a pay & weigh who didn't stay for group support because if you follow the Slimming World plan 100% you WILL lose weight.
Not Tried Alli, Have Tried Orlistat On Prescription
posted by JANIS ROANTREE on 13 May 2009 at 2:35 pmI know the side effects can be severe, and very antisocial. Have experienced them! Wont go into detail, they were extremely embarrassing, and WAS following a low-fat diet.
Am a member of Slimming world and much prefer it, much more user friendly! there are no-short cuts, even though we would ALL like there to be :-(
