Although human cloning is still banned, France now welcomes human stem cell research, says Health Minister, Philippe Douste-Blazy.

Philippe Douste-Blazy added that stem cell research could bring considerable therapeutic hope for people with heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson's disease and many others.

French scientists have been given a five year window during which they can carry out research. Philippe Douste-Blazy said that 'embryos which have not been subject to parental plans can be worked on'.

Most of the stem cells will be sourced from six day old fertilised human eggs.

It would have been unrealistic to prevent stem cell research given its importance, said Francois Aubert, Junior Science Minister.

France now places itself in between the UK and the USA. In the UK stem cell research and cloning are both allowed. The US only allows stem cell research in privately funded laboratories - cloning is prohibited.
