Medical Mutual of Ohio is receiving a large volume of phone calls from customers asking for information about the intensifying swine flu outbreak in the United States.
In response, the company has posted a message on its Web site's member page, directing customers and member groups to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Web site for the latest updates.
"The health of our customers is our primary concern and we will continue to assist them in following the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control," said Dr. Robert Rzewnicki, Medical Mutual's chief medical officer. "With so much misinformation out there, the most important recommendation we are making to our customers is to get all of the facts about swine flu."
Dr. Rzewnicki said precautions are extremely important. "Influenza is thought to spread mainly through close person-to-person contact with infected individuals who cough and sneeze, releasing droplets containing the virus into the air," he said. "Remember that those tiny droplets can also appear on surfaces that you touch, so get in the habit of not touching your mouth, eyes and nose, and wash your hands often."
Most emergency or urgent care services, along with prescription Tamiflu and Relenza, are covered by Medical Mutual's in-network benefits plans. However, customers need to check to make sure medically-necessary services for swine flu diagnosis and drug treatments are covered under their benefit plans. They may also call the customer service number on their Medical Mutual membership cards for more information.
Founded in 1934, Medical Mutual of Ohio is the oldest and largest health insurance company based in Ohio. The company serves its customers through high-quality, affordable group and personal health insurance plans, and third-party administrative services to self-insured group customers.
