You can never be too prepared for a hospital emergency in times of natural or manmade disasters. Meeting Joint Commission Emergency Management (EM) standards for mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery can only be achieved through drills and exercises. These exercises need to be thoughtfully designed and carried-out at each facility, on all shifts, and involve all employees, as well as local, state, and regional emergency response partners. While the Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP) is not required by either the Joint Commission or CMS, HSEEP or a similar capability-based exercise program, if used effectively, can go a long way in enabling a hospital to meet the Joint Commission and CMS requirements in taking an "all-hazards" approach to designing, conducting, evaluating, and improving your hospital's emergency drills and exercises.
ECRI Institute's Web conference Practice Makes Perfect: Emergency Drill and Exercise Management 101 on May 22, 2009, will present an understanding of capability-based exercise programs like HSEEP and how important they are to a hospital's emergency management effort. Presenters will also cover:
- The essence of capability-based programs and how they bring positive results to your emergency management drill and exercises
- HSEEP and its potential framework for your hospital's exercise design, development, conduct, evaluation, and improvement planning
- Effectively meeting the challenges that our critical access, small, medium and large hospitals face in establishing and maintaining an effective capability-based exercise program
- Lessons learned from a previous exercise, as reevaluated according to today's capability-based program like HSEEP
Speakers include:
Luke A. Petosa, M.Sc., HEM, HEM-CC, Director, Center for Education and Training, ECRI Institute, Director, Mid-Atlantic OSHA Training Institute Education Center
Marge McFarlane, Ph.D., M.S., CHSP, Superior Performance Consultants, Wisconsin Hospital Preparedness Program HSEEP Coordinator
