Best selling author John Muncie has launched the third edition of his core criminology textbook, Youth and Crime, with a lecture entitled No Justice for Children: Young People in Conflict with the Law.
Youth and crime are a constant topic of controversy within media and politics. 'Feral youth' are now considered to be bringing the UK to the verge of anarchy. Muncie, Professor of Criminology at the Open University, will challenge images of negativity and the demonization of youth, drawing attention to the UK's record in complying with rights conventions designed to uphold the dignity, respect and humanity of children who find themselves in conflict with the law.
Muncie will review the UK's youth justice record in complying with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, comparing the approaches between the UK and other European countries.
"In all of the talk of making children behave responsibly it is often overlooked that the state too has responsibilities to ensure that 'every child' does indeed 'matter'," says Muncie. "This is a driving theme of my book: that the focus must be as much on adult reaction as on 'youthful behaviour'."
Youth & Crime 3rd edition, published by SAGE, offers the most comprehensive and authoritative overview of youth and crime available. A subject of constant debate, the new edition covers a wide range of contemporary issues, including:
- antisocial behaviour orders (ASBOs)
- gangs
- gun and knife crime
- early intervention initiatives
- the respect agenda
- restorative justice
- child imprisonment
Muncie's lecture, No Justice for Children: Young People in Conflict with the Law, will be held on Thursday 7th May, 5.30pm at City University, London.
Youth and Crime, Third Edition, by John Muncie, is published by SAGE.
