The North Carolina and Oregon Legislatures recently considered bills related to sex education in schools. Summaries appear below.
~ North Carolina: The state Senate pulled a bill (S. 221) from the floor that would have required schools to offer parents of students in grades seven through nine a choice between a sex education curriculum focused on abstinence until marriage or one that includes information on contraception, the AP/Greensboro News & Record reports. The measure was returned to a Senate committee. State Sen. Ellie Kinnaird (D), co-chair of the committee, said the measure was pulled in part because lawmakers wanted more senators to be present to vote (AP/Greensboro News & Record, 5/5).
~ Oregon: The state Senate Education Committee approved a bill (H.B. 2509) that would require public elementary and secondary schools to offer age-appropriate human sexuality courses, the Salem Statesman Journal reports. Planned Parenthood and the state education and human services departments support the measure. The state House approved the bill last month; it now goes to the full Senate (Loew, Salem Statesman Journal, 5/5).
